Illumos is an open source Solaris-based operating system that is designed to be a compatible, open source replacement for legacy Solaris operating systems. It is a fork of the OpenSolaris source code and is maintained by a community of developers. The core of Illumos is based on the original UNIX System V Release 4 (SVR4) and UnixWare 7 source code from the now defunct SCO Unix. It provides a modern POSIX-compliant operating system for use on x86 and SPARC architectures, with optional kernel-level virtualization support for running multiple operating systems in virtual machines. The Illumos kernel is compiled from the same source code as the Oracle Solaris kernel, but with additional bug fixes and security enhancements. Illumos also includes a complete suite of open source applications and utilities, including a web server, database server, and application server.
