eCryptfs is an open source cryptographic file system for Linux that provides transparent encryption of files and folders. It is designed to protect data stored on the computer by encrypting it with a secure key. eCryptfs is a kernel-level file system, meaning it works at the core level of the operating system to protect data. This means that the encryption is transparent to applications, making it easier to use. eCryptfs also provides a secure key management system, allowing users to create and manage encryption keys for their files and folders. The key management system allows users to securely store their encryption keys and use them to decrypt their data when needed. eCryptfs also provides additional security features such as integrity checking, secure deletion, and access control. eCryptfs is widely used in enterprise and government environments as well as by individual users.
