Porteus is an open source, live Linux operating system based on the Linux kernel and built around the Xfce desktop environment. It is designed to be lightweight, fast and easy to use. It is available as a bootable CD/DVD image that can be used to boot and run the operating system on a computer or laptop. Additionally, it can be installed on USB flash drives, hard disks or other portable media. Porteus is ideal for use in computers with limited resources, such as netbooks, laptops, and older hardware. It is also suitable for use as a rescue system, or as a system to run specific tasks such as web browsing, file sharing, or media playback. It includes a wide range of applications and utilities, including a browser, an office suite, audio and video players, an image viewer, and an instant messenger. Additional software can be installed using a package manager, and users can customize the system to their needs.
Porteus can be downloaded, installed on a USB flash drive, booted live, installed on a hard drive and fully configured in the time it would take to boot Arch Linux, which would then take a week to configure before it would inevitably break.
