Microsoft Visual Studio is a comprehensive suite of software development tools for creating applications for Windows, the web, mobile devices, and cloud computing. It includes a code editor, debugging and testing tools, a graphical UI designer, an integrated development environment (IDE), and more. With Visual Studio, developers can create applications for Windows, the web, mobile devices, and cloud services. It supports multiple languages, including C#, Visual Basic, F#, and C++. It also contains a rich library of code snippets, templates, and libraries. Visual Studio provides a comprehensive development environment for creating software applications. It supports the latest technologies and development tools, including source control, team collaboration, and automated testing. Visual Studio is used by millions of software developers around the world to create professional-grade applications.
Atom does not have any solid debugging features (and packages) ready to use. For example, it is not possible to debug ASP .NET MVC (IIS) applications without a lot of digging and writing your own package to do this. Atom.io is not an IDE. The features of atom-ide- * packages are too poor compared to Visual Studio. Not being able to create C# projects makes Atom absolutely unsuitable for the tasks that Visual Studio does (well, too slow, but).
Atom is a text editor. While it is extensible, it is not primarily an IDE like Visual Studio and would need a lot of tweaking to even come close.
VS is a large-scale specialized IDE. Atom is (as defined) a "hackable text editor". Now, how similar are these?
It is good because it is well designed and powerful.
Free. Support for numerous languages. Tons of packages to add features like running scripts.
Visual Studio Code is a text editor based on electron.js like Atom.
Visual Studio Code is a text editor.
Still a powerful tool with a much smaller size.
Visual Studio is a massive workhorse. VS code is simpler, lighter and leaner, with a greater focus on editing your code. The plug-in system allows you to add just the right amount of power to get the job done without overdoing it.
Eclipse supports multiple languages, looks good too
One is for Java and the other for C#.
Free and open source software. Change of leadership from Oracle to the Apache Foundation.
It is for MS-Windows, MacOSX and Linux too! You can make projects independent of the operating system.
NetBeans is an IDE, but it doesn't work for .NET languages, so it's hard to call it a viable alternative.
This is only designed for Java not .net.
It is specifically for C#, as Visual Studio is mainly used for
I have used MonoDevelop extensively for C# work on Linux. It can work with Visual Studio projects and much of the hotkey mappings match Visual Studio. WinForms support is available, but there is no GUI design tool / functionality available. Too bad there is no XAML / WPF support on Linux ...
Android Studio only edits programs for Android (Java language), while Visual Studio has a lot of built-in language support.
Android Studio can only edit / create applications for Android, which is a mobile operating system developed by Google, but you cannot edit VB.net or C# in Android Studio as you can in Visual Studio.
For a specific Android implementation, the native IDE is the best.
This is the best application for Android development.
Android Studio is a Java IDE designed specifically for creating Android applications, while Visual Studio is a full-featured .NET IDE with many available platforms.
For C++ development, QT Creator is much less bloated. It is fast and has all the necessary features. VisualStudio has too much unnecessary garbage, which makes it very slow when running on a slightly older machine and also takes up a lot of disk space.
At first, the intelligent search ib QtCreator is much better than Microsoft's IntelliSens. The hotkey combinations are simpler and more intuitive. I search simpler and intuitively clearer.
I found everything in Qt Creator for Linux that is in VS for Windows.
It is very similar to it and the size is very low! {Visual Studio - up to 3 GB / sharp Develop - only up to 15 MB in size}
It is small, lightweight, specialized in .NET development (but C++ is also available), supports WinForms and WPF design and has NuGet support. Perfect IDE for lightweight C# development (if you don't need to manage a team of 10000 employees working on 5 large projects).
Very similar IDE for C# and VB.NET.
N0 azu messy, without complex licenses
Free and light for commercial use.
Only to a certain extent. Missing many features and no longer updated.
Open source made entirely in an independent language very similar to TurboPascal (Delphi).
For its young age, it is well matured and is a very powerful IDE with great CMake support and other tools such as excellent refactoring tools and a sophisticated code completion system.
It is cross-platform and offers the benefits of JetBrains' well-polished and powerful IDE platform.
For me and for my company is the best alternative, cleverly, the dynamic linking library is very similar to VS, it automatically creates a makefile. Very good class wizards! Debugging and subversion / GIT and SFTP integrated into the environment.
Excellent development environment, continuous updating, clear vision, active support.

Atom is a text editor and lacks almost all of the features necessary to be considered an IDE. While there are extensions available to make Atom behave similarly to an IDE, they cannot come close to replicating the features needed for effective development. Comparing Visual Studio to Atom is like comparing a motorcycle to a tricycle with a motor attached to one of the wheels.
