Tutanota is an open source, secure and privacy-focused email service. It is designed to protect users’ data and communications by encrypting all emails and contacts stored on their servers. It offers a secure, private and ad-free environment for users to send, receive and store their emails. Tutanota features an encrypted calendar, file storage and secure messaging, as well as an email address book. The service also offers an easy-to-use web interface, an Android app and a desktop client for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Tutanota also provides users with the ability to create disposable email addresses, which are handy for signing up for services without worrying about your primary address becoming spammed. The service also offers encrypted contacts management and an encrypted mailbox, allowing users to store their emails securely. Tutanota also provides users with the ability to share encrypted emails with other Tutanota users, as well as via public key encryption.
It is encrypted and open source email.
Tutanota sets the new limit: one user = one account. The administration already blocks accounts for known purposes. It does not seem too much the perspective to use Tutanota further.
Mailpile simply provides a client and not an online service.

Mailvelope is not a service like Tutanota. Instead, it allows you to use your PGP keys to encrypt/decrypt emails while using your existing webmail. More limited, but not as inconvenient to switch to.
It does not provide end-to-end encryption. It has stated that striving for privacy is largely theater, when responding to criticism about its use of U.S.-based servers.
Startmail, Protonmail and Tutanota are services similar in type and approach to the problem of providing easy-to-use PGP-based encrypted email.
The discontinued project was acquired by another company and became a generic end-to-end encryption software.

Protonmail and Tutanota are free services that offer easy-to-use encrypted email with a good set of features offered for free (and more on the way). Both allow you to send emails to other recipients (via PGP or a link) in a way that resists mass surveillance of the kind Gmail, Yahoo! and Outlook are vulnerable to.
