That's worth a lot in an age when intelligence agencies simply store all emails that travel across the web in plain text (as Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo offer).

Mailbox.org is a good replacement for StartMail because it offers PGP-based encryption (you choose whether you want them to handle your private keys or not), and it comes with Calendar and Contacts features that are better than StartMail. But you have to pay a bit to use it. A closer 1-for-1 replacement for Startmail in terms of functionality might be Protonmail, but it has fewer features than Mailbox.org.

Moreover, Mailfence is much more than just secure email, Mailfence is a complete suite with calendar, documents, contacts and presence all included. A true alternative to the Google Apps suite.

Protonmail is probably the best alternative to Startmail at the moment. Both services are fairly basic in terms of functionality, but both also offer end-to-end encryption using the tried and tested PGP standard (unlike Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo). Consider Tutanota as well, which is very good for the same reason/purpose.
