A Shorten URL app (or website) is a type of web service which provides a way to reduce the length of a given web address (URL). It is used to make a long URL easier to remember, share, and type. The shortened URL is often a random combination of letters and numbers which is much easier to remember and share than a long and complicated URL. The shortened URL is linked to the original, longer URL, so that when someone clicks on the short URL, they are taken to the original web address. Additionally, Shorten URL apps often provide features such as tracking how many times a URL has been clicked and providing additional security by allowing the user to password protect their URL.
