GNU Screen is a terminal multiplexer that allows a user to access multiple terminal sessions from a single terminal window. It is a full-screen window manager that allows you to organize multiple terminal sessions into one window. Screen offers features such as split-screen viewing, allowing users to view multiple sessions at the same time, scrollback buffer, which allows the user to scroll through the history of previous sessions, copy and paste between sessions, and the ability to detach and reattach sessions. Screen also allows users to run programs in the background and log out while they are still running. GNU Screen is highly configurable and can be customised to suit the user’s needs.
Tmux is the new kid on the terminal multiplexing block. Better readability in configuration and code, vertical splitting and real updates.
