Dtach is a small program that emulates the detach feature of screen. It is used to run a program in an environment that is protected from the controlling terminal and allows the program to continue running after the user has logged out. Dtach is especially useful for running long-running processes or for running interactive applications over a network connection, such as telnet or ssh. It can also be used to create a persistent session for a text-based application, such as a mail client. Dtach is lightweight and fast, and works on many platforms, including Linux, Mac OS X, and Solaris.
