P7zip is a free and open-source file archiver application for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. It is primarily used to compress and decompress files and folders in a variety of formats, including 7z, ZIP, TAR, GZIP, and BZIP2. It can also create self-extracting archives, password-protected archives, and create split archives that can span multiple disks. Additionally, p7zip can convert various archive formats to the 7z format and vice-versa. Advanced users can also take advantage of its command-line interface for more advanced options.

7-Zip is a very good GUI for situations where using p7zip as a command line program or plug-in is not practical.
