MD5sums is a cryptographic hash function used to verify the integrity of a file. It is a mathematical algorithm that takes an arbitrary block of data (usually a file) and produces a fixed-length string of characters (known as a "hash") that is unique to the original data set. The hash is also a one-way function, meaning that it cannot be reversed to produce the original data. To verify the integrity of a file, the MD5sums of the original file are compared to the MD5sums of the downloaded file. If the two match, the file has not been tampered with.
