iTerm2 is an open-source terminal emulator for macOS, designed to provide users with a robust, powerful, and highly customizable environment for working with text-based applications. It provides full support for Unix systems, including bash, zsh, and tmux, as well as full support for SSH and telnet. It supports the full set of standard terminal operations, including copy/paste, find/replace, and search/replace. The scripting language can be used to automate various tasks, such as creating custom hotkeys, creating aliases, and more. It is a drop-down terminal with advanced features such as split-screen. Its only major limitation is that it doesn't work as well (it's likely to crash or become unresponsive) in non-KDE environments, such as Cinnamon and GNOME.
Split screen works well even on desktops / window managers for which it was not designed (e.g. i3).
