IOTA is an open-source distributed ledger technology (DLT) designed for the Internet of Things (IoT). It is a decentralized, distributed, and open-source system, designed to facilitate fast, secure, and low-cost data and value transfers without fees. The IOTA network does not use a blockchain, but rather uses a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG), called the Tangle, for its consensus and data storage layer. This enables IOTA to be extremely efficient in both speed and cost; transactions are fast and free. IOTA also features quantum-resistant cryptography and a decentralized governance model. IOTA enables the exchange of data and value between machines, people, and businesses, and provides a platform for building secure, permissionless applications.
