World of Tanks (WoT) is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online game developed by Wargaming and released in 2010. It is a tank simulation game where players take control of different tanks from different nations and eras, and battle it out against other players online. The game features a variety of different game modes, such as PvE (player versus environment), where players must complete objectives, and PvP (player versus player), where players must battle each other. Players can also customize their tanks with different upgrades and modules, as well as purchase new tanks and other items from the in-game store. The game also features an XP system, where players can unlock new tanks, modules, and upgrades as they progress through the game. World of Tanks is available on multiple platforms, including Windows, Xbox, and PlayStation.
It is online, so no download is required. However, there is a downloadable client. Many more options in turrets and helmets, but they're not exactly realistic. If you're looking for an alternative based on real life events, this isn't the best choice. If you're looking for a fun alternative without the need for downloads and such, then this is the best option I've ever seen.
