Speex is an open-source, patent-free audio codec designed for compressing voice audio, such as for streaming audio over the Internet. It is optimized for voice communications at low bit rates, and is widely used for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications. Speex is based on the CELP algorithm and can be used for both speech and general audio, and is also capable of providing high-quality stereo audio. Speex is designed to work with different types of networks and devices, including 3G, Wi-Fi, and broadband. It supports variable bit rate (VBR) and variable frame rate (VFR) coding, as well as lossless and lossy compression. Additionally, Speex is compatible with the Opus codec and several other audio codecs.
