Open Rails is an open source train simulator for Microsoft Windows, released under the GNU General Public License. It is intended to be a highly realistic simulation of the operation of real-world trains and the environment in which they operate. It is designed to be modular, extensible, and expandable, so that users can add their own content such as locomotives, rolling stock, activities, and routes. The game contains realistic physics, sounds, and graphics, and is intended to be a simulator rather than an arcade game. Open Rails includes a built-in track editor which allows users to design their own routes, as well as an activity editor which allows users to create their own scenarios. It also includes various tools for activities, such as a timetable system and an AI train dispatcher. Open Rails is developed by a team of volunteers, and is supported by a large community of users who contribute content to the platform.
