Description

Microsoft Bob was a software application from Microsoft, first released in 1995. It was designed to provide a more user-friendly interface for the Windows operating system, similar to the graphical user interfaces (GUIs) of the Macintosh and X Window System. It provided an easy-to-use graphical environment for connecting to the Internet, sending and receiving email, chatting, playing games, and creating documents. The program was designed to be an alternative to the command line-based MS-DOS, which many users found intimidating. It featured a cartoonish, anthropomorphic interface and a simple point-and-click navigation system. Microsoft Bob was intended to be a "gateway" to the Internet, and came bundled with various on-line services, such as an email account, a web browser, a news reader, and a search engine. It also included various productivity tools, such as a word processor, a spreadsheet, a paint program, and a calculator. Despite its initially strong reception, Microsoft Bob failed to achieve widespread acceptance and was discontinued in 1996.
