These roles can be either a "townsperson" or a "mafia member". The townspeople must work together to figure out who the mafia members are, while the mafia members must work together to deceive the townspeople and eliminate them one-by-one. The game is typically played in rounds, with each round consisting of two distinct phases. The first phase is the "night phase", where the mafia members will secretly meet and decide which townsperson they want to eliminate. Then, during the second phase (the "day phase"), the townspeople will meet and discuss who they think the mafia members are. After this discussion, the townspeople must vote to eliminate a suspect. If the majority of townspeople vote to eliminate the correct mafia member, they win the game. However, if they eliminate an innocent person, the mafia members win.
