Libdvdcss is an open-source library for accessing and unscrambling DVDs encrypted with the Content Scrambling System (CSS). It is part of the VideoLAN project and provides the means to access commercial DVDs on a variety of operating systems. The library is used by many software applications and media players, such as VLC, HandBrake, and VideoLAN Client, to view and play encrypted DVDs. It allows users to copy the data from a DVD to their hard drive, and decrypt the data while doing so. It also provides an API for developers to use, which makes it easier to implement DVD playback code into their own applications. As a result, libdvdcss has become the de facto standard for accessing commercial DVD content.
