Zotero is a partial alternative to Docear. Docear is an open source combination of mind mapping and reference management for academic writing. Zotero manages references, as Docear is integrated with word processing software and has an excellent browser plug-in for extracting metadata from articles. But it lacks the mind mapping component. Docear can also be integrated with Zotero, so you can benefit from the power of both.
