A deface (or website defacement) is an act of malicious alteration of the visual appearance of a website or application. It is typically accomplished by accessing the web server or application server and replacing the website's or application's home page with a different page, often intended to cause shock, disruption, or embarrassment. The goal of a deface attack is generally to spread a political or social message and to gain notoriety for the attacker. The defacement may include a message from the hacker, a humorous message, or simply a graphic that expresses the hacker's opinion. The attack may also include redirecting the website's visitors to another website or adding links to other websites.
