BibDesk is a reference management application for Mac OS X, designed for users such as students and researchers who need to manage bibliographic information for their work. It provides a graphical user interface for editing bibliographic information and for creating and managing BibTeX databases. BibDesk can be used to search and download bibliographic records from online databases, such as PubMed and Google Scholar, as well as to create, edit and maintain bibliographic databases in BibTeX and other formats. It also allows users to create citations and bibliographies in various formats, including LaTeX and HTML, which can be exported to word processing documents. BibDesk also provides a number of features to make managing bibliographic data easier, such as drag-and-drop support for importing and exporting records, AppleScript support for automation, advanced search capabilities, and support for multiple databases. It can also be used to generate citations and bibliographies for use in documents, as well as to link documents to bibliographic databases.
Works best with LaTeX documents, since citation export is redundant: the JabRef database is a simple .bib file. Available for all major platforms, offers automatic addition of entries via DOI or arXiv-ID, has everything one needs as a citation and reference manager.

portable, since in Java, it is based only on the bib file (there is no separate database), it generates clean bib files (no internal fields)
