Adventure Game Studio (AGS) is an open-source development software and application designed for creating 2D point-and-click adventure games. It is used to create games for Windows, MacOS, Linux, and Android. AGS provides a powerful scripting language for developers to create custom game objects and environments. It also features a drag-and-drop interface, as well as a set of tools and utilities to help with game development. AGS also includes support for audio, video, and graphics, as well as a variety of other features such as a level editor and a built-in debugger. AGS is free to use and provides a comprehensive set of tools for creating interactive adventure games.

Unity is a generic 3D game engine. Adventure Game Studio is a 2D engine aimed at created adventure games only. Since Unity is not a specialized tool, I do not consider this to be a suitable alternative.
