XZ Utils is a free, open source command-line file compression and decompression tool for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X. It is used to create, extract, and compress/decompress files in the .xz and .lzma formats. It is based on the 7-zip and LZMA SDK libraries and is designed to be much faster than gzip and bzip2. XZ Utils also provides additional features, such as the ability to repair damaged archives, which other tools are not able to do. It is a powerful and versatile tool for managing file sizes and archiving important documents.
