Winamp is a powerful audio and music application that allows users to play, organize, and manage digital music, podcasts, and videos. The application is available for Windows, Mac, and Android devices. It supports a wide range of file types and can be used to create playlists, customize audio effects, and provide seamless playback even with huge music collections. It also enables users to sync music libraries across multiple devices and access online radio stations, podcasts, and streaming services. Winamp provides an intuitive and user-friendly interface with support for multiple skins, making it easy and enjoyable to listen to music.
It is only a media player. It is not a software for album organization.
Saying that VLC is an alternative to Winamp is like saying that a hammer is an alternative to a Swiss Army knife. You can pound, pry and slash with both, but that doesn't mean you're going to have a good time doing it.
Does not allow playlists and other essential features in a music player. Fantastic at playing videos though.
Not enough library/playlist/organization functions like WinAmp
VLC media management capabilities are nowhere near Winamp
Winamp is a classic desktop library-based music player, valued largely for its aesthetics and extensive library of skins and display support. VLC is the opposite with respect to UI and UX, being a ramshackle video 'Swiss Army Knife', skins are an afterthought that often breaks. It's like recommending FileZilla as a replacement for Vuze.
He is only a player, not a library administrator / organizer.
no crossfading between the audio that you are playing
It is mainly for non-audio videos.
No proper library management or qualifications.
video player, not audio player.
No decent playlist or library
The functionality is not the same.
VLC is a multimedia player that can also function as a music player, with playlists and management similar to Winamp.
AIMP is a spiritual successor to Winamp, with a similar user interface, but with modern features, full Unicode support, support for CUE files, etc.
Many powerful features. This player can do it all. Crossfade, change speed, change pitch, stream radio, analyze track BPM, convert, edit one playlist while listening to another, the possibilities are endless.
This is one of the best audio player applications available online, in many ways similar to Winamp, but with some new features.Highly recommended!
AIMP is like Winamp, but not abandoned and more powerful.
Free, customizable and always up to date.
MPC-HC is a video player, not a dedicated music player by any stretch. It's also ugly as sin, so it's the opposite of a music player like Winamp that has a huge library of skins.
No proper library management or qualifications.
Well, I've been using Winamp for almost 10 years.
Clementine has integration with Last.Fm, better visual aesthetics (in my opinion), song fingerprinting to find tags, and is cross-platform.
MPV is a movie player. Movie players are not dedicated, library-based music players.
The user interface is amazing! You can really make this Jukebox look the way you, YOU want it too!
Play mod/chip tunes and MP3s
Its skins and interface is almost identical to Winamp. It is simple, minimalist and works like a charm, just like the good ol'Winamp.
Exactly like Winamp, except that it is also open source and also runs on Linux.
Discontinued The currently active fork is Media Player Classic Home Cinema, but MPC can still be downloaded from FreeCodec.com.
MPC is a good player, but it is not a library manager like WinAmp.
Winamp was a lightweight, customizable and robust media player that supported multiple formats and audio, unlike iTunes.
iTunes is and always has been software intended only for Mac users and/or Apple device compatibility. No customization, limited functionality for media playback, and limited codec and format support. Windows users are better off sticking with Winamp or foobar2000.
It works very well. The only alternative to iTunes that compares to it is VLC.
Linux doesn't have many Winamp clones, but this is very close.
Users can add plug-ins to add more functionality.
Discontinued No further versions since 2016. See version information: http://deadbeef.sourceforge.net/
Discontinued No new releases and features since 2014. The most recent versions, 2.6.2 (stable) and 2.9.1 (development), released in February and March 2014, still work and can be downloaded from the official website.
Discontinued The project is no longer maintained. The latest version, 0.8.4, released in April 2015, can still be downloaded from the official website.
Discontinued No updates since 2013. YouTube integration is broken due to no updates since YouTube API changed. See changelog: http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/pculture.org/Miro/

Winamp plays and organizes music. VLC simply plays everything. It also doesn't support critical functions like playback and tagging.
