Portal is a first-person puzzle-platform video game developed and published by Valve Corporation. The game was released in 2007 for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The player takes the role of Chell, a test subject in the Aperture Science Enrichment Center, a research facility owned by the fictional Aperture Science Corporation. As with other games in the Half-Life series, players must solve puzzles and traverse obstacle courses using the environment and various “portal” devices. These portals create two-way connections between two flat planes, allowing the player to traverse the levels in unconventional ways. The game also features a story line, in which Chell must traverse the Aperture Science facility and confront the mysterious AI character GLaDOS. GLaDOS attempts to prevent Chell from completing the tests by deploying deadly obstacles and hazards, as well as by taunting the player with sarcastic remarks. Portal has been widely acclaimed for its unique gameplay, innovative concepts, and darkly humorous storyline. Its success has led to the development of a sequel, Portal 2, as well as several spin-off games.
