Ophcrack is a free open source (GPL) program for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux which attempts to recover passwords from Windows systems by cracking their hashes. It is based on rainbow tables, a form of time-memory tradeoff which makes it possible to crack hashes in a fraction of the time required by brute-force methods. The program is highly configurable and supports many different hash algorithms, including Microsoft LM hashes, MD4 and MD5, NTLM, and SHA1. It also includes a graphical user interface and a command line version for automated use. Ophcrack is an excellent tool for recovering lost passwords and can be used to increase the overall security of a system.
