GNU Hurd is an open-source, microkernel-based operating system with the goal of creating a Unix-like operating system that is entirely free software. It was initially developed by the GNU Project, a project of the Free Software Foundation, and is now maintained by the Hurd community. The Hurd aims to surpass the Unix kernel in functionality, security, and stability while remaining largely compatible with existing Unix programs and protocols. It uses a server-client architecture, in which individual programs are able to communicate with the kernel using a message-passing system. The Hurd is written in the programming language C and consists of several servers that run on the Mach microkernel to implement file systems, network protocols, and other features. The Hurd also includes a set of libraries and utilities to facilitate system administration.
