Cisco AnyConnect es una aplicación patentada que permite a los usuarios conectarse a un servicio VPN. Muchas universidades utilizan esto como parte de un servicio que pagan de Cisco. Por lo tanto, las instituciones públicas dependen innecesariamente de esta aplicación de código cerrado para que sus propios estudiantes, profesores e investigadores se conecten a la red de su propia universidad pública. Esto no solo equivale a entregar el control a una corporación privada, privatizando así el dinero público. También es una vulnerabilidad de seguridad y privacidad potencial, ya que Cisco ha sido un objetivo a largo plazo del programa de espionaje de la NSA. Tampoco funciona bien en Linux.
