Description

Chess is a two-player board game played on a checkered board with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid. Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The objective of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king by placing it under an inescapable threat of capture. The game is played on a board composed of 64 squares of alternating colors. The pieces are divided into two matching sets, by convention called White and Black. Each set consists of 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The pieces are set out as shown in the diagram and photo. The players alternate making moves with one set of pieces during the game. Chess is a game of strategy and tactics. The players must use their pieces to attack and defend in order to checkmate the opponent's king. The game can end in a draw, where neither player can checkmate the other. The game can also end in a stalemate, where one player cannot make a legal move but is not in checkmate.
